Upcycling is ‘the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value’ (source: wikipedia). The difficulty of collecting specific waste materials and working them in a mechanized production facility may be its biggest challenges. In the case of my STEEL chair: enough used broom handles in the world but how do you get them to where they need to be worked? If I have an order of 50 chairs (which equals 500 meters of broom hanldes) I simply do not have enough supply and using new wood and making it look old and used is not an option for me. An active contribution by consumers in the supply chain and an understanding that it often requires honest handmade work is necessary to make this work. But are we there yet?
