Best mattress for stomach sleepers should support and cushion for your midsection as well as keeping your spine aligned is important if you turn in for the night by belly-flopping onto your bed. Medium-firm mattresses will do the trick. The six mattresses we recommend are tailored specifically for stomach sleepers based on our tests over the last three years. This guide is a good starting point, keeping in mind that firmness levels vary. As well as exploring the brands we suggest, we encourage you to read our innerspring mattress and foam mattress guides to find out more about other mattresses.

Our Recommendation

Rockwell Stearns & Foster

Pressure Relief and Extra Support

A memory-foam cushion adds comfort and support to this lofty, upscale-looking bed. The quilting style may not be for everyone.

If you sleep on your stomach, the Rockwell Stearns & Foster mattress may assist in keeping your spine aligned, even in cases where gravity pulls your hips back. Coils around ones perimeter provide excellent edge support. A quilted pillow top tops our foam pick, the Tempur-Adapt, which offers pressure relief while cradling the body. In the negative reviews, either the mattress’ firmness or its quilting made it feel “lumpy.” The return policy depends on where you bought the mattress.

Our Recommendation

Tempur-Adapt

Super-Comfy, but Expensive

Tempur-Adapt is our favorite mattress, thanks to its luxury foam that sinks slowly and its stable edge support. The price is also twice as high.

A slow, body-conforming sink in memory foam is what stomach sleepers of Tempur-Adapt prefer. We found it hard to deny its supportive feel, but either you’ll love it or hate it. This mattress should last even if you weigh above 200 pounds. It features dense memory foam (412.2 pounds/cubic foot) and 1,000 coils (in a queen). We’ll refund you a full amount, less shipping costs, if you’re not completely satisfied with Tempur-Adapt after 90 days.

Our Recommendation

WinkBed

A Good Amount of Coils on Top of A Good Cushion

During the 2021 update, WinkBed’s microcoils will be replaced by 2 inches of polyfoam, giving any user a more foamy mattress. This mattress offers the support stomach sleepers need to maintain their posture. The previous WinkBed version of this mattress was extremely fluffy but, as you can see, the current version retains the same excellent materials (such as thick coils and high density foam) that are essential for stomach sleepers. We’ll cover your entire purchase with lifetime warranty and guarantee for 120 days.

Our Recommendation

William S. Roger, Sr. Estate

Mattress includes medium and firm sides, which makes it good for stomach sleepers as well as side sleepers. A thick comfort piece consists of two thick blocks of Talalay latex (a breathable foam made from rubber trees). Our mattress is designed to last for decades despite a weight limit of 200 pounds. During our 100-day trial period, when you’re not satisfied, the entire purchase amount will be refunded (minus shipping if you chose glove delivery(white) instead of free box drop-off).

Our recommendation

Zenhaven

Mattresses Made from Latex-Foam

Its higher price tag may not deter some from trying the all-latex Zenhaven mattress, which might be more durable as well as breathable (adding to its cooling effect). Although its quality is excellent, this latex mattress is surprisingly affordable.

Zenhaven’s two-sided design will appeal to stomach-sleepers of any size looking for a mattress without lumps, bumps, or poop. Latex is the only material in it. In addition to providing cushioning, this mattress still has an unmistakable sense of support (like sleeping on giant erasers). Luxury Plush (which is best suited for stomach-and-side sleepers) is medium-firm and Gentle Firm (which is best suited for stomach-and-back sleepers) is firm. Latex is a durable material, so regardless of a person’s weight, it can withstand most people. Due to its weight, it requires a very solid platform or bedframe. Following your free trial period of 100 nights, you will get full refund of the $100 delivery fee if you aren’t satisfied.

Our Recommendation

Leesa Hybrid

Combination of Soft Foam and Coils

This Leesa Hybrid is one of the top mattresses because of its sturdy foam layers and perfect amount of bounce. Further, the cover is thicker and cooler than those of competitors.

If you sleep on your stomach (or roll onto your side), you may find it very comfortable to have a mattress that offers good support. Despite being less expensive, this bed is more comfortable than cheap online beds because the core of this bed contains dense memory foam (4 pounds per cubic foot). The Leesa Hybrid is a good long-term investment for most sleepers, including those that weigh not less 200 pounds. Although some users reported sagging (reviewers whose weights were not identified), others did not. The 100-night trial allows you to check out the Leesa platform and return it within that period for full refund if you’re not satisfied.

Our recommendation

Rockwell Stearns & Foster

Pressure Relief and Extra Support

The bed features a cushion made of memory foam to provide comfort and support. Despite its prominent quilting, it may not be for everyone.

Our recommendation

Tempur-Adapt

High-Priced, but Super-Comfy

Tempur-Adapt is our favorite mattress, thanks to its luxury foam that sinks slowly and its stable edge support. The price is also twice as high.

Our recommendation

WinkBed

A Good Amount of Coils on Top of A Good Cushion

This bed features tightly coiled coils along its perimeter, while its cushioning on the pillow top is soft and cradling without feeling sticky.

Our recommendation

William S. Roger, Sr. Estate

In Box, Super-Durability

These flippable, two-piece mattresses are made with latex as well as extra-thick coils, which provide durability even in more expensive mattresses. If you need assistance assembling it despite its weight, there will be an additional fee.

Our recommendation

Zenhaven

Mattresses Made from Latex-Foam

All-latex Zenhaven mattresses may be more durable and breathable (which also could boost their cooling properties) than many foam mattresses, despite their higher price tag. Although its quality is excellent, this latex mattress is surprisingly affordable.

Our recommendation

Leesa Hybrid

Soft and Cradling Foam-On-Coil Combination

This Leesa Hybrid is one of the top mattresses because of its sturdy foam layers and perfect amount of bounce. Further, the cover is thicker and cooler than those of competitors.

The Best Mattress for Stomach Sleepers

A mattress that is supportive enough to support the spine, but soft enough to cushion your hips, shoulders, and knees is ideal for people who sleep on their stomachs. The firmer the mattress, the better for a medium-firm sleep. In her 108-year-old mattress store in NYC, Long’s Bedding & Interiors, Terri Long explains that a soft mattress may cause lower back strains if sunk too deeply into it. When you are a back sleeper who occasionally falls to your side, you may prefer a medium mattress with a little more give. In general, people who sleep on their sides need more cushion than those who sleep on their stomachs.

Visit a mattress store in person to find the perfect mattress for you, and bring along a friend. Take picture of yourself lying on your stomach while your best friend takes it. The length of your neck should reach knee-high. In our mattress buying guide, we recommend you lie on the mattress for at least 10 to 15 minutes before buying it. Lie belly-down with your spine neutral and you shouldn’t feel any pain. If you’re unable to pick up a mattress in person, consider the Zenhaven or a mattress with a hefty return policy, like Leesa’s Hybrid, which has two sides and a variety of firmness options.

The mattress you pick for your stomach sleeper should provide both back support and reduction of pressure points (see the image below to see where to focus your attention). It is not necessary to have pressure-point relief for someone who moves a lot at night because they are not necessarily suffering from pain. When you’re counting sheep while wide awake, the last thing you want is to have your ribs or anything else pressing against the mattress. It’s important not to sink too much into the cushion when it comes to cushioning.

If you are a stomach sleeper, then you can determine the perfect level of plushness and support for yourself. It starts with firm options that are best for stomach sleepers (or stomach sleepers who alternate between stomach and back sleeping) and moves on to progressively more cushioned options that are still supportive (especially for stomach sleepers who alternate between stomach and back sleeping). We selected the following mattresses and back-sleepers for comparison purposes regarding firmness:

In addition, some of our picks, like a few of our favorites, come in softer or firmer varieties. In such a case, it might be worthwhile to test out all the mattresses. The firmness and softness of stomach sleepers vary with their sizes and shapes. Among our notable competitors from Costco, the Novaform ComfortGrande may not provide the support needed by a linebacker, but is an excellent choice for a ballet dancer. These choices can be used as an approximate measure of a mattress’ firmness.

Our Recommendation

Stears & Franklin Estate Rockwell (pillowtop Firm)

Pressure Relief in Addition to Additional Support

By adding memory-foam to this bed, it replaces the classic innerspring with a more upscale option. While its quilting style is prominent, not everyone will enjoy it.

  • Its purpose. Those who prefer a relatively firm with just enough quilted padding should find the Rockwell Estate of Stearns and Foster most suitable.
  • What that feels like. Although this mattress does have classic innersprings, its pillow top will make it feel medium-firm.
  • What makes it great. Participants in Stearns & Foster’s stomach-sleeping test consistently praised the firmness and cushioning of the Estate Rockwell bed. In total, there are 1,160 pocketed coils surrounding the perimeter of the bed, which conforms to your body’s curves and keeps your spine in alignment, preventing you from falling out of bed. This foam pillow top by Tempur-Adapt feels cradling and gives you the feeling that you are resting on something like a cloud. A heavy-duty mattress, even though it is firmer than the Charles Rogers Estate SE. Furthermore, there is a decrease in springiness.
  • Not a dealbreaker, but it has flaws. A number of testers disliked the quilted top due to its deep ridges. This memory foam is 12% less dense than the recommended density for people weighing between 200 pounds and 33,000 pounds. In spite of the coils in innerspring beds potentially preventing sagging, they are extremely strong so they may help prevent any sagging that is significant. The Stearns & Foster reviews have reported that the body impression or softening over time has changed in several of the good (equal-keeled and detailed) reviews. If your mattress has not been rotated within six months, it is recommended that you avoid sleeping in the same spot every night. Depending on the retailer, this mattress may be subject to different return policies. (If durability is an issue, you may want to consider the Charles Rogers Estate SE or the Zenhaven. Both mattresses are made from more durable foam, but are springier, and are sold directly to customers, making complaints easier to resolve.

Our recommendation

Tempur-Adapt

Super-Comfy, but Expensive

Tempur-Adapt is our favorite mattress, thanks to its luxury foam that sinks slowly and its stable edge support. The price is also twice as high.

  • Its purpose. Tempur-Adapt mattresses are beneficial for side sleepers who like low, conforming hips. Wearing it should be easy even for people who weigh over 200 pounds.
  • What it feels like. Support is firm but not stiff, thanks to the memory foam top.
  • What makes it great. Tempur Adapt makes an exception to the rule of curve-conforming, memory foam mattresses not feeling very supportive. Its slow and gradual sinking makes it comfortable for stomach sleepers, as opposed to less expensive, less dense foam mattresses. It is stable and allows the stomach not to sink too far into the mattress (despite little springiness). This mattress’ second layer, which is made of memory foam, as well as its top layer, which is made of a proprietary polyfoam-like material, provide an overall sense of support. A person who weighs over 200 pounds can sleep well on Tempur-Adapt for quite a while.
  • Not a dealbreaker, but it has flaws. The slow conforming and sink-in feel of this mattress made it popular among our testers. The most expensive Tempur-Pedic mattress doesn’t come with the latest pressure-relieving technology found in the top-line Tempur-Pedic mattress. Tempur-Pedic mattresses are returnable within 90 days for full refund, but shipping costs ($100+) must be covered by the customer. (If you spend more than $500 on a mattress, the Novaform ComfortGrande from Costco is a good option.) Shop in-store whenever possible. You might not be willing to return a Tempur-Pedic mattress if you buy it from a store instead of online.

Our Recommendation

WinkBed

A Good Amount of Coils on Top of A Good Cushion

Despite its sturdy perimeter, the Pillow Top of the WinkBed is soft and comfortable, without feeling sticky.

  • Its purpose. As a coil-based sleep system that has a pillowed top, WinkBed is comfortable and supportive. Sleepers who rotate to their back or side may find the Luxury Firm mattress appealing.
  • What it feels like. It feels quite firm when you first sit on the WinkBed Luxury Firm. A week and a half after breaking it in, it becomes medium-firm and will still offer plenty of support to stomach sleepers. The surface feels smooth even though it has a light cushion.
  • What makes it great. People who sleep on their stomachs may be more likely to benefit from the WinkBed 2021 compared to its previous version. It’s more durable, resistant to compression, and supportive since it’s 2.5 pounds of polyfoam. (A queen mattress has 1,054 pocketed coils). The edge of the bed is stiffened by thicker springs on its perimeter. By combining these components, you are less likely to experience lower back pain, and your hips, knees, and chest will also be relieved of pressure.

From what we can gather from the few reviews for this mattress, most people describe it as firm rather than soft-which may be the best mattress for stomach sleepers. All the other reviews on the Winkbed website say that it is too firm or too soft, and one mentions firmness (but without specifying sleep position). If you prefer a firmer bed but sleep on your stomach, you might be happier with a softer mattress.

It is important that you sleep on the mattress for at least thirty days before returning it or exchanging it for a different firmness. There is a fee of $50 for exchanging the currency, however. After the 30-day period has expired (or years later, if your tastes change) you can exchange mattress for half the price (plus shipping, removal and disposal charges).

  • Not a deal breaker, but flaws nonetheless. Especially if you weigh over 200 pounds, you can create a body impression in WinkBed’s quilted foam layer. Rotate the tip every 2 weeks during the first three months, and then every 2 months thereafter. The amount of times a mattress would have to be rotated is incredible for a heavy mattress without handles. (Mattress experts recommend cleaning your mattress every six months.) WinkBed’s firmness levels also cannot be tried at a store before purchase. Therefore, you must buy the bed online and return it if it doesn’t fit.

Our Recommendation

Charles Rogers Estate, S.E.

In Box, Super-Durability

Even more expensive mattresses do not feature materials as durable and high-quality as this flippable, two-piece mattress. The only problem is that it is heavy, so you’ll probably need help setting it up.

  • Its purpose. The mattress comes with two firmness levels to choose from, so it can accommodate stomach sleepers, side sleepers, and combination sleepers. Those who sleep on their stomachs and backs will enjoy Estate SE’s firmness in the flat position. Because this mattress is a foam mattress (latex) with the coils placed above it, it is perfect for those who sleep hot or are heavier.
  • What it feels like. The medium-firm innersprings on one side feel medium-firm, whereas the firm innersprings on the other side feel slightly firmer. It has a quilted latex-and-fiber piece (separate piece) that provides comfort without being too soft.
  • What makes it great. As well as a boxed mattress for convenience, Estate SE is made with high-quality resources. Since the mattress is heavy, it will be delivered in two pieces. The flippable bottom portion of the mattress contains 1,221 pocketed coils and intrinsically durable latex layers that should provide adequate back support for people weighing up to 200 pounds in the long run. Thick coils around ones perimeter will prevent rolling off. The top portion of the mattress is quilted with layers of Fiber Padding and Talalay Latex, which cushions the belly and hips without letting them sink too far. (Talalay latex is softer than Dunlop latex, which is used for lower support portions of the mattress). The mattress can be returned up to 100 days after delivery for full refund, less shipping as well as surcharges, if you ordered white-glove service.
  • Not a deal breaker, but flaws nonetheless. Only New York, New Jersey, as well as Pennsylvania offer the Charles Rogers Estate SE. It will be delivered free of charge by FedEx, but be sure someone can assist with carrying the boxes (depending on the mattress size). Generally, if you live within 100 miles of the Charles Rogers A.F.A. factory in East Rutherford, N.J., the company will deliver your mattress unboxed on its own trucks without additional cost to you. The delivery cost is $150 if gloves are included.

Our Recommendation

Zenhaven

Mattresses Made of Latex-Foam

  • Its purpose. Designed for stomach-sleepers who require smooth surfaces without fluff, the Zenhaven is a flip-up mattress made of 100% latex. This side provides extra support when you lie on your stomach or turn occasionally onto your back. The Luxury Plush side offers pressure relief if you occasionally sleep on your side. Heavy users, including those over 200 pounds, can expect this latex mattress to hold up.
  • The way it feels. ZENHAIN’s Luxury Plush side was described as being softer than its Gentle Firm side while its latter side was described as offering a slightly firmer feeling (about 20% firmer according to the company).
  • What makes it great. Zenhaven surprised testers by feeling soft and elastic, unlike most of the online latex mattresses they tested previously. Talalay latex is popular with people who frequently change positions because of its subtle springiness (it’s like a foam mattress without sinking or feeling ‘stuck’), in comparison to cheaper alternatives (most Dunlop latex mattresses). It is a fact that mattresses made from latex last longer than mattress types containing polyfoam or memory foam. But Talalay latex foams have a much greater degree of give and ventilation than those made with memory foam or polyfoam.
  • Faults, but not deal breakers. Zenhaven does have some plushness, but it’s not as plush as some of the lower-cost latex products. Its luxurious surface is also made from Talalay, but with a fiber-padded top that is added for extra comfort. It is also available from Charles Rogers—and it has the same Talalay material. Mattresses made from latex, like those made by Zenhaven, usually cost a bit more than mattresses made with other materials. If you’re on a budget but want latex’s durability and won’t break the bank, the Sleep On Latex Pure Green mattress is a great alternative. It costs less than half the price but offers the same durability and is still a good choice. There is only one place to experience the Zenhaven in New York City and that is Saatva’s showroom. The company offers a 180-day try-out period, during which you can return the mattress for full refund, minus $100 for shipping charges of the mattress.

Our Recommendation

Leesa Hybrid

A Foam-On-Coil Mattress that Provides Gentle Bounce

The Leesa Hybrid mattress stands out among hybrid mattresses thanks to its thick foam layers and just enough bounce. It produces better cooling due to its thicker and thinner cover compared to its competitors.

  • Its purpose. With its cushiony feel and firm support, the Leesa Hybrid mattress can appeal to stomach sleepers who desire the best of both worlds. Foam of this density is usually durable for people who weigh over 200 pounds, including people who are tall and thin.
  • The way it feels. Hybrid mattresses tend to bounce a bit more than medium-firm mattresses, making them softer than normal mattresses.
  • What makes it great. As expected, the Leesa Hybrid is firmer than expected. However, we believe this is for stomach sleepers only. With a density of 3 pounds/cubic foot of polyurethane foam and density of 4 pounds/cubic foot of memory foam, this mattress provides more support than Leesa’s foam-only original. Meanwhile, the Hybrid’s foam springs conform to your body for pressure point relief, which is particularly useful if you are a stomach sleeper who turns frequently onto your side every night. Leesa Hybrids can be tried in select stores. Leesa offers a 100-night trial period where you can return your mattress for a refund.
  • Not a deal breaker, but flaws nonetheless. We think the Leesa Hybrid is worth its higher price because its components are highly durable. There have been a number of comments about sagging, but we don’t know how many users commented. It would be best if you slept on the middle part of the Leesa Hybrid every six months at the very least. For questions or problems regarding your bed, please contact our customer service department. Leesa consistently receives positive reviews for its customer service team. This mattress produces more motion convey than Tempur-Adapt, which makes it easier to feel your partner’s movements. The tradeoff here is a springy, easy-to-move mattress in exchange for bouncy comfort.

Health Concerns for Stomach-Sleepers

Body mechanics may not be optimized when you stomach-sleep. In addition to a firm mattress that doesn’t sag and shields you from back pain, there are some other possible musculoskeletal problems you may encounter. The University of Southern California’s Raymond Hah, MD, assistant professor of clinical orthopaedic surgery, explains that a variety of medical issues can contribute to people having to change their sleeping position, such as carpal tunnel syndrome or degenerative diseases in the neck. As a side sleeper, he described experiencing neck pain or feeling like his arms are asleep. The narrow opening where the nerves exit the neck when you are lying on your stomach is caused by the fact that you are forced to turn your head in that direction. Your arm can feel pain that radiates down after being pinched.

Cubital tunnel syndrome patients are as likely to experience tingly or numb fingers while waking up in the middle of the night, sore arms, and weak hands, in addition to waking with these symptoms. Whenever you pull a nerve, it becomes stretched (as well as being referred to as your “funny bone”).

Make sure that you stay away from using thick pillows to prevent your spine from being in a comfortable position and straining the lower back.

Don’t forget to keep an eye on your jaw as well. Some dentists believe that stomach-sleeping can sometimes cause sore jaws. Dena Fischer, DDS, acting director of the Center for Clinical Research at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, says that when you sleep with your head against the mattress, pillow, or arm, you could put pressure on your lower jaw. The lower jaw is pushed forward or backward when people sleep on there chin.

A majority of people change positions while they are sleeping. In the event that you wake up feeling unwell, you may benefit from adjusting your sleep position rather than your mattress. By sleeping higher on the pillow, you can get your head, neck, and shoulders on the same level. Sleeping on a thick pillow will cause your spine to be pushed out of alignment, resulting in lower back pain. Squishy pillows (such as those we recommend) are also recommended in our pillow guide. You should also move your arm away from your head if your arm is intentionally pressing on your jaw.

Whenever you can, switch positions while sleeping, whether you are sore or not. In general, if you consider the medium-firm (as opposed to straight-out firm) versions of our mattress picks, you won’t overtax particular parts of your body.

Notable Contenders

The following mattresses offer various levels of firmness for different types of stomach-sleepers. They fell short of our main picks for various basis, but one of these may be right for you. (All prices below are for queen-size mattresses and may vary.)

For stomach sleepers who prefer a puffy mattress with a medium-firm feel, IKEA’s Hesstun innerspring mattress ($500) is an affordable option. This mattress features soft Eurotops and mini pocket springs near its surface, rare for such an affordable mattress. Through the pockets below, the belly and hips are cushioned and the back is prevented from arching. We observed participants being turned off by the Euro top surface feel (which they described as “filled with feathers”) as well as by the low number of coils in each layer (594 instead of 604) found in more expensive models. In the event that the mattress doesn’t meet your needs within the yearlong trial period, you can exchange it. Nevertheless, it can’t be returned outright, and you’ll have to return it directly to the store if you are dissatisfied with it.

Traditional innerspring mattresses might be the best mattress for stomach sleepers that often roll onto the sides while trying to fall asleep, such as Saatva Classic in Luxury Firm. Each coil and foam in the mattress is individually wrapped, so they conform to your pressure points. A lower support layer made of sturdy, pocketed coils protects your back (though you may hear and feel the movements of your partner during the night). In our long-term testing, we’ve noticed that it’s softened from a firm medium-firm to a plain medium-firm, but it’s still comfortable. Our test team has not yet tested the Saatva Classic in Firmer since we prefer a really firm surface. The surface of the Classic can indent with time if not rotated regularly at least every six months, and you should sleep on all six sides of the mattress. You have 180 nights to decide if you like it; if you don’t, return it for full refund, minus the $100 delivery fee.

Novaform’s ComfortGrande ($600) is only available in one firmness level. In contrast, people who occasionally sleep on their sides might enjoy the pillowy surface, since they are accustomed to a flatter, more compact surface. However, the company does not state its foam density specifically, but suggests that it is between 3 and 312 pounds/cubic foot (typically for mattresses around $1,000, but lower than the weight that should be appropriate for people who weigh over 200 pounds). A company representative states that the polyfoam mattresses have a density of 2 to 212 pounds/cubic foot (slightly more dense and more supportive than more expensive mattresses). For Costco to ship this mattress, it will take up to five business days. Returns are accepted for any reason. Read carefully this guide to get quality information crucial when choosing the best mattress for stomach sleepers
